A very good morning students
Thank you for Logging in.
Hope you have gone through the notes that were sent yesterday.
Today i am sending you notes on how to collect data from Primary source
HOW IS DATA COLLECTED: STATISTICAL METHOD/MODES OF DATA COLLECTION
When basic data is collected from Primary source , it involves the study of a set of Statistical method or Statistical techniques. The well known methods of collecting Primary data are:
- DIRECT PERSONAL INVESTIGATION
- INDIRECT ORAL INVESTIGATION
- INFORMATION FROM LOCAL SOURCES OR CORRESPONDENTS
- INFORMATION THROUGH QUESTIONNAIRES AND SCHEDULES
i) Mailing Method ii) Enumerator's Method
Let us begin with the first method:
- Direct Personal Investigation : Is a method by which data are personally collected by the investigator from the Informants. example - Direct contact with the workers of an Industry to obtain information about their economic condition. Suitability : the field of investigation is very limited or not very large - a greater degree of originality of data is required Merits : - Originality - Data have a degree of originality - Accuracy - Data are fairly accurate when collected personally - Reliability - Since information is collected by the investigator himself, reliability of data is not doubted De-Merits : - Difficult to cover wide areas - Is difficult to cover a wide area of study
- Costly : Is an expensive method in terms of time, money and effort involved
2. Indirect Oral Investigation : Indirect oral investigation is the method by which information is not obtained from the person regarding whom the information is needed. It is collected orally from other persons who are expected to possess the necesaryinformation. These other persons are known as witness. example data on the economic conditions of workers may be collected from their employers rather than the workers themselves. Suitability : the field of investigation is relatively large - not possible to have direct contavt with the concerned informants - the concerned informants are not capable of giving information because of their ignorance or illiteracy Merits : Wide Coverage - method can be applied when the field of investigation is very wide : Less Expensive - less expensive as compared to Direct Personal Investigation : Expert Opinion - using this method an investigator can seek opinion of the expert and thus make his information more reliable Demerits : Less Accurate - because information collected is from person other than the concerned informants :Biased - there can be personal bias of the witness giving information : Doubtful conclusion - may lead to doubtful conclusions due to carelessness of the witness
3. Information from local sources or correspondents : Under this metod , investigator appoints local persons or correspondents at different places. They collect information in their own way and furnish the same to the investigator.
Suitability : - regular and continuous informatin is needed.
- the area of investigation is large
- should be used for general explanation
Merits : Economical - is quite economical in terms of time, money or effects involved.
:Wide coverage - method allows a fairly wide coverage of investgation.
Demerits : Loss of Originality - Originality of data is sacrificed owing to the lack of personal contact with the respondents.
: Lack of uniformity - this is because date is collected by a number of correspondents.
: Personal Bias - this method suffers from the personal bias of the correspondents.
Tomorrow we will be doing the 4th method of collection through primary data which is INFORMTION THROUGH QUESTIONNAIRES AND SCHEDULES
IT HAS TWO PARTS
- MAILING METHOD
- ENUMERATOR'S METHOD
