A very good morning students

Thankyou for logging in

After reading and understanding the reforms introduced in agriculture

Today we shall learn about the Green Revolution introduced in the Agricultural sector

We are going to look at the topic in different  parts:
  • Meaning of Green revolution
  • Two phases of Green revolution
  • Advantages and Disadvantages of Green revolution
  • Debate over subsidies
Let us now look at the Green revolution that took place during the Planning Period

Meaning of Green Revolution : In India it refers to the large increase in production of foodgrains due to use of high yeilding variety(HYV) seeds in the mid 60's

Next we look at the two phases of the Green Revolution

The 1st phase was between 1960-1970
Crops grown were Wheat and Rice
It was followed only in rich states like  Punjab, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu

The second phase was from 1970-1980
The phase now spread to other states
Basically there were 5 crops that were Rice , Wheat ,Maize, Millets and Barley.
Green revolution increased the production of crops from 25% to around 100%

Next we look at the Achievements
1. It increased crop productivity

2.It increased area under production

3.Farmers practised subsistence farming ie Commercial farming

4Farmers became self sufficient

The failures of the Green revolution were
1. It was limited to only few crops

2.The area of cultivation was limited

3.It increased the Inequality among the farmers

4. There were social impacts that created a divide among the  population

The debate over subsidies

1 Why should subsidies be given when we have high yeilding variety seeds

2. The subsidies only benefited the rich farmers

3.It leads to overuse of resources because they can waste them since the payment is nominal

4.Subsidies should only be targetted to the poor farmers rather than completely eliminating it
